Satara:
Satara is the headquarters of district Satara. Sri Chhatrapati
Shahu Maharaj founded this city at the foothill of Ajinkyatara,
a magnificent hill fort. grandson of Shiva-ji, from 1707 to
1749. It was declared the capital of Maratha empire on 23rd
May 1698 by Rajaram Maharaj.
This historical place is worth visiting. 128 km from Kolhapur.
Various temples and a fort are there at Satara. And there
is Shivaji Maharaj Museum opposite bus stand. Shivaji's
apparel, ornaments, swords and even the tiger-claws are displayed
in another, exhibition attached to the new palace.
There are
hotels also at Satara. The easiest way from Mahabaleshwar
to Panaji is via Satara. Buses ply frequently along this road.
From Satara, buses go to Bombay, Pune, Kolhapur, Panaji and
different places in the state and its neighbouring areas. |
