Kolhapur:

Kolhapur is situated in the headquarters of district Kolhapur. The religious, histrorical, educational & industrial centre. Also flourished in the films & wrestling. The temple of Mahalaxmi or Ambabai has earned this place the status of Dakshin Kashi, the place as sacred as Kashi.

This temple is an architectural masterpiece, built by Chalukya king Karndev in 634 AD. Historicaly the city was ruled by Yadavas till 1212 AD, by Mughals till 1675 AD.

Sri Shivaji Maharaj annexed it to Swarajya in 1675 AD. And in 1708 Maharani Tarabai shifted her capital from Panhala to Kolhapur.

The regime of Rajarshi Shahu Maharaj was epoch-making in the field of social reforms, upliftment of downtrodden and the universalisation of education.
